What are some of attorney Reiter’s significant airline accident cases?
Attorney Reiter obtained a number of million and/or multi-million dollar settlements worth $32 million for the survivors of 14 persons killed in the American Airlines Flight 587 crash at Belle Harbor, New York, including residents of the United States and the Dominican Republic. He also served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Plaintiff’s Steering Committee on that case. *
Attorney Reiter was a member of the Plaintiff’s Steering Committee for the SwissAir Flight 111 crash near Peggy’s Cove Nova Scotia, where he obtained a number of million and/or multi-million dollar settlements worth $5 million.*
Attorney Reiter obtained the highest verdict for a single passenger in the EgyptAir 990 crash ($3.6 million including interest). This case was the first to award loss of society damages to a victim’s sisters, brother and cousin as dependent relatives under the Death on the High Seas Act, in addition to awarding substantial damages to the victim’s parents. *
In 2014, attorney Reiter obtained a $15 million settlement in a wrongful death case involving a woman, 32, who died in a commuter plane crash in New York. She left a husband and young son. Other details of the case are confidential.
Attorney Reiter was deeply involved in representing the families of victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. * In this connection, a lawsuit was brought challenging the regulations issued by the United States government regarding the September 11th Victim Compensation Fund and their implementation by the Special Master, alleging that the amount of compensation for economic loss being awarded was inadequate. Jonathan C. Reiter personally argued the case before the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, resulting in a decision that rejected any arbitrary limit on economic damages and directed that the Special Master consider the full amount of economic loss suffered by each family. (See Schneider v. Feinberg, 345 F.3d 135 (2nd Cir. 2003).
